World Book Day

World Book Day was created by UNESCO on 23rd April 1995 as a worldwide celebration of books and reading.

World Book Day is marked in over 100 countries around the globe.

World Book Day is a perfect opportunity to remind children of the importance of reading and it really helps to spark their enthusiasm and get them excited to pick up a new book.

“The Canadian Corps was ordered to seize Vimy Ridge in April 1917. [Map] Situated in northern France, the heavily-fortified seven-kilometre ridge held a commanding view over the Allied lines. The Canadians would be assaulting over an open graveyard since previous French attacks had failed with over 100,000 casualties.”

Earth Day

In spring 1970, Senator Gaylord Nelson created Earth Day as a way to force this issue onto the national agenda. Twenty million Americans demonstrated in different U.S. cities, and it worked!

Today more than a billion people celebrate Earth Day each year on April 22, to protect the planet from things like pollution and deforestation.

The April 22 date was selected in part because it fell between colleges' spring break and final exams.

And it was also when Arbor Day was observed, a day when people are encouraged to plant trees, which began in Nebraska in 1872.
